Content: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Developer: AlphaDream Publisher: Nintendo Platforms:Â 3DS The Mario & Luigi series has been around for over a decade now. With each sequel the series tries to do something a little bit different to differentiate itself from the other games. In Paper Jam,Â Paper Mario joins Mario & Luigi on their quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom from the nefarious Bowser and Paper Bowser. Â In Mario & Luigi games, Mario always uses the A-button to jump and interact with things, whileÂ Luigi uses the B-button. With Paper Mario as an addition, youÂ have him using the Y-button. It was a bit confusing to have to useÂ a 3rd button during gameplayÂ at first but you get used to it quickly. Soon enough you'll have no problems dodging baddies as Paper Mario, especially with his jump being much floatier than the other brothers. Â The gameplay itself is Mario & LuigiÂ fun as usual. Every enemy you encounter have different attacks to dodge with different tells to figure out how they do their attacks. For example, a Goomba might lift his right foot and look up to tell you he's going to attack Mario, while he lifts his left foot and looks down to attack Luigi. Â In fact, I find most of the fun in the battle system is figuring out how to dodge enemies rather than beating them up. The series has always worked with jump attacks, hammer attacks, and special attacks in the form of Bros. Attacks (which are basically just mini-games where the better you preform the more damage you deal). Â Although I feel like the series needs to do something other than having a different character to play as to spice the gameplay up. Maybe take a cue out of the first two Paper Mario games to give you different jump and hammer abilities? They've basically been the same since the first game came out a decade ago. Â Next, there are mini-games. A lot of them. Too many, in fact. Many of whichÂ are mandatory and often involve saving Paper Toads in order to progress the plot. Sometimes they come at random too. Why they thought this was a good idea, I don't know. It certainly stopped being fun real quick. Â Finally, thereÂ are papercraft battles. Since Bowser's Inside Story the Mario & Luigi series tried to include unique battle scenes inÂ the games and honestly, they never added much. Sure, it was a novelty to play as Giant Bowser and Giant Luigi for a bit, but in the end they were just long-winded mini-games. Papercraft battles feel very much the same, although the gameplay shifted into more of a 3D battle arena-type game, so there's more skill involved than memorization. Still, they ended up distracting more from the game rather than adding to it. Â Bringing it back to PaperÂ Mario, the only thing his series brings with him are himself, Paper Peach, Paper Bowser, and a whole lot of Paper Toads. And, that's it really. Which is kind of a disappointment. The Paper Mario games, at least the first three, have a lot of unique characters and worlds in them. Here it's been distilled down to what the Paper Mario seriesÂ has in relation to the Mario & Luigi series. Â And, well, it's not a whole lot. In the end, it amounts to the usual Mario story, where Bowser(s) kidnap the princess(es) and Mario (plus Luigi & Paper Mario) have toÂ save the day. The brothers travel to the usualÂ areas such asÂ Grassy Plains, a Sunny Desert, and Snowy Mountains while fighting the usual enemies like Goombas and Bob-ombs. Â ...and doesn't that sound boring? I mean, it's a Mario game so of course it has all these Mario elements inÂ it. Â But that's not what Mario & Luigi, and Mario RPGs in general, have been about. They're different; they're story driven games that are allowed to experiment with the usual tropes. That's why they exist. Mario platformers stay true to their roots because that's what works for them. It's a nice breath of fresh air playing a Mario RPG because we get to see the characters we love in new worlds fighting baddies we haven't seen before and meeting unique and fun characters that'll never exist in the other games. Â The Mario RPG games are supposed to be different. Here, it's not. And that's what makes itÂ boring. Which is disappointing to say. Basically they took the elements that the Mario & Luigi series and Paper Mario series shared, threw away everything unique to both series, threw in a couple mini-games, slapped the Mario & Luigi label on it and called it a day. Â Alright, that's hyperbole. But like I said, it's really... boring. And I think that's the most disappointing part of the game. It doesn't try to do anything new, it doesn't really expand on Mario's world. You fight Koopas, Hammer Bros., Petey Piranha, then finally you reach Bowser's Castle and save the princess(es). Â But there's paper characters too and it's all zany and crazy to see Paper Mario interact with the 3D world! See, he's paper, so he can turn into airplanes and stuff! It's really cool! Right...? Â Well, I don't feel that way. Honestly the whole thing feels sterile, it feels too safe. It's the game's biggest downfall. Â I do have to admit, though, the dialogue is as good as ever. The localization team did their usual magic and managed to make the game feel a bit less boring. The humor, while slapstick for the most part,Â gave me a couple laughs. Â The music is pretty good too, though that's no surprise.Â Yoko ShimomuraÂ returns as the series's regular composer and her work is still as good as ever. She somehow manages to make the music feel like the most unique aspect of the area they're used in, putting a spin on the usual tropes. Â For example, the desert area sounds like a desert area, yet it's very upbeat and energetic. The snowy mountains, however, feels desolate yet hopeful. And the battle themes are as fun and varied as usual.Â She still has her touch even after all these years. Â In the end, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is certainly not a bad game. Battles, while starting to get a little tired, are as fun as usual, and the music is great. The game was engaging and rewarding enough that I felt compelled to do all of the side-content, including a Boss Rush mode and the many, many mini-games. Â The story is where the game really takes a dive, and the different characters, or lack thereof, certainly don't help. For me, it takes out a lot of the charm and experimentation the series had before it. But hey, the dialogue is still good at least? Â My final playtime was about 50 hours long, though you can easily beat the game in around 30 if you ignore all of the side-content. SCORE: 6 out of 10
